Two products X and Y are formed in the following reaction sequence. [figure] The suitable method that can be used for the separation of products X and Y is :

  1. Continuous extraction
  2. Differential extraction
  3. Sublimation
  4. Fractional distillation

Answer

(4) Fractional distillation

Solution

C6H6 + CH3Cl anhydr. AlCl3 C6H5CH3 (W, toluene) + HCl

∵ -CH3 is ortho/para-directing, nitration of toluene gives o-nitrotoluene (X) and p-nitrotoluene (Y).

These are isomers with boiling points not far apart (about 222 °C and 238 °C).

As per NCERT, liquids whose boiling points do not differ much are separated by fractional distillation.

Answer: (4)
