Ques. 1JEE Main 2024, 6 April (Morning Shift)

The mean and standard deviation of 20 observations are found to be 10 and 2, respectively. On rechecking, it was found that an observation by mistake was taken 8 instead of 12. The correct standard deviation is

  1. 1.94
  2. 3.96
  3. 3.86
  4. 1.8

Answer

(2) 3.96

Solution

xi = 20 10 = 200; xi220 - 102 = 22 xi2 = 2080

Replace 8 by 12: xi = 200 - 8 + 12 = 204 mean = 10.2

xi2 = 2080 - 64 + 144 = 2160

2 = 216020 - (10.2)2 = 108 - 104.04 = 3.96

= 3.96
