A and B in the following reactions are : [figure]

  1. [figure]
  2. [figure]
  3. A = RR'CHCN, B = NaOH
  4. [figure]

Answer

(4) [figure]

Solution

Step 1: HCN/KCN adds to the carbonyl group (nucleophilic addition of CN-) to give the cyanohydrin:

R-CO-R' [KCN]HCN RR'C(OH)CN (A)

Step 2: The product RR'C(OH)CH2NH2 has -CH2NH2 in place of -C N the nitrile group is reduced.

As per NCERT, nitriles are reduced to primary amines by LiAlH4: -C N LiAlH4 -CH2NH2 B = LiAlH4
