A gymnast is able to balance his body upside down even in the total darkness because of

  1. tectorial membrane
  2. organ of corti
  3. cochlea
  4. vestibular apparatus.

Answer

(4) vestibular apparatus.

Solution

As per NCERT, the inner ear has a complex system called the vestibular apparatus (three semicircular canals and the otolith organ — saccule and utricle) above the cochlea.

⇒ Its crista (in the ampullae) and macula are the specific receptors of the vestibular apparatus responsible for maintenance of balance of the body and posture.

∵ The cochlea, organ of Corti and tectorial membrane are concerned with hearing, not balance.

∴ The gymnast balances his body even in total darkness because of the vestibular apparatus.
