Given below are two statements: In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below

  1. Both Statement I and Statement II are true
  2. Both Statement I and Statement II are false
  3. Statement I is true but Statement II is false
  4. Statement I is false but Statement II is true

Answer

(1) Both Statement I and Statement II are true

Solution

Statement I: Pauling electronegativities – F 4.0, O 3.5, N 3.0 ⇒ F > O > N. Correct.

Statement II: In OF2, F (more electronegative) takes −1 each ⇒ x + 2(−1) = 0 ⇒ O = +2.

In Na2O, Na is +1 ⇒ 2(+1) + x = 0 ⇒ O = −2. Correct.

∴ Both statements are true.
