Given below are two statements : In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below :

  1. Both Statement I and Statement II are true
  2. Both Statement I and Statement II are false
  3. Statement I is true but Statement II is false
  4. Statement I is false but Statement II is true

Answer

(1) Both Statement I and Statement II are true

Solution

Statement I:

[Al2O3, Cr2O3]: both amphoteric ⇒ same nature

[Cl2O7, Mn2O7]: both acidic (Cl and Mn in +7, highest oxidation state) ⇒ same nature

[Na2O, V2O3]: Na2O basic; as per NCERT, V2O3 (V in +3) is basic ⇒ same nature

[CO, N2O]: both neutral ⇒ same nature

⇒ all 4 pairs contain oxides of the same nature ∴ Statement I is true.

Statement II:

Na2O – basic, Al2O3 – amphoteric, CO – neutral, Cl2O7 – acidic

⇒ most basic = Na2O (oxide of the most electropositive element), most acidic = Cl2O7 ∴ Statement II is true.
