A cylindrical vessel of 40 cm radius is completely filled with water and its capacity is 528 dm3 (dm : decimeter). The vessel is placed on a solid block of exactly same height as vessel. If a small hole is made at 70 cm below the top of water level, then horizontal range of water falling on the ground in the beginning is cm.

  1. 120 2
  2. 140 2
  3. 140 3
  4. 120 3

Answer

(2) 140 2

Solution

[figure]

Capacity =528 dm3=0.528 m3

Height of vessel: H0= V r2= 0.528 227 (0.4)2= 0.528 722 0.16

⇒ H0=1.05 m =105 cm (the block is also 105 cm high)

Depth of the hole below the water surface: h=70 cm

Height of the hole above the ground: H=(105-70)+105=140 cm

Efflux speed v= 2gh; time to fall through H: t= 2Hg

⇒ Range x=vt=2 hH=2 70 140

∴ x=2 70 2=140 2 cm
