Ques. 1JEE Main 2024, 31 January (Evening Shift)

Identify the name reaction. [figure]

  1. Stephen Reaction
  2. Etard Reaction
  3. Gattermann - Koch Reaction
  4. Rosenmund Reduction

Answer

(3) Gattermann - Koch Reaction

Solution

Benzene + CO + HCl (anhyd. AlCl3/CuCl) → benzaldehyde: direct formylation = Gattermann–Koch reaction

∵ CO + HCl give HCOCl in situ; AlCl3 converts it into the electrophile H C=O

Option (A) Stephen: RCN SnCl2/HCl, H3O+ RCHO

Option (B) Etard: C6H5CH3 CrO2Cl2, H3O+ C6H5CHO

Option (D) Rosenmund: RCOCl H2/Pd-BaSO4 RCHO

Answer: (3)
