Given below are two statements : In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below :

  1. Both Statement I and Statement II are false
  2. Statement I is false but Statement II is true
  3. Both Statement I and Statement II are true
  4. Statement I is true but Statement II is false

Answer

(3) Both Statement I and Statement II are true

Solution

Statement I: As per NCERT, CO2, SiO2 and GeO2 are acidic, while SnO2 and PbO2 are amphoteric; among the monoxides, GeO is distinctly acidic, whereas SnO and PbO are amphoteric.

[SiO2, CO2]: both acidic

[SnO, SnO2]: both amphoteric ✓

[PbO, PbO2]: both amphoteric ✓

[GeO, GeO2]: both acidic

Number of pairs = 2. Statement I is true.

Statement II: In BF3, B has only 6 electrons in its valence shell (sp2, trigonal planar) electron deficient, acts as a Lewis acid and accepts a lone pair from NH3:

BF3 + :NH3 F3B NH3

Statement II is true.

Answer: (3)
