Which of the following biomolecules is common to respiration-mediated breakdown of fats, carbohydrates and proteins?

  1. Glucose-6-phosphate
  2. Fructose 1, 6-bisphosphate
  3. Pyruvic acid
  4. Acetyl CoA

Answer

(4) Acetyl CoA

Solution

As per NCERT, fatty acids are broken down to acetyl CoA before entering the respiratory pathway, glycerol enters as PGAL, and proteins are broken down to amino acids which enter at pyruvic acid, acetyl CoA or within the Krebs' cycle.

⇒ Glucose enters glycolysis and pyruvic acid is converted to acetyl CoA before the TCA cycle.

∴ Acetyl CoA is the common intermediate in the breakdown of fats, carbohydrates and proteins.
