Number of paramagnetic complexes among the following is . [MnBr4]2-, [NiCl4]2-, [Ni(CN)4]2-, [Ni(CO)4], [CoF6]3-, [Fe(CN)6]4-, [Mn(CN)6]3-, [Ti(CN)6]3-, [Cu(H2O)6]2+, [Co(C2O4)3]3-

Answer

6

Solution

[MnBr4]2-: Mn2+, 3d5, tetrahedral ⇒ 5 unpaired ⇒ paramagnetic

[NiCl4]2-: Ni2+, 3d8, sp3 ⇒ 2 unpaired ⇒ paramagnetic

[Ni(CN)4]2-: Ni2+, 3d8, strong field, dsp2 ⇒ 0 unpaired ⇒ diamagnetic

[Ni(CO)4]: Ni(0), 3d10 ⇒ diamagnetic

[CoF6]3-: Co3+, 3d6, weak field ( t2g4eg2) ⇒ 4 unpaired ⇒ paramagnetic

[Fe(CN)6]4-: Fe2+, 3d6, strong field ( t2g6) ⇒ diamagnetic

[Mn(CN)6]3-: Mn3+, 3d4, strong field ( t2g4) ⇒ 2 unpaired ⇒ paramagnetic

[Ti(CN)6]3-: Ti3+, 3d1 ⇒ 1 unpaired ⇒ paramagnetic

[Cu(H2O)6]2+: Cu2+, 3d9 ⇒ 1 unpaired ⇒ paramagnetic

[Co(C2O4)3]3-: Co3+, 3d6, low spin ( t2g6) ⇒ diamagnetic

∴ Number of paramagnetic complexes = 6
