Given below are two statements: In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below

  1. Both Statement I and Statement II are correct
  2. Both Statement I and Statement II are incorrect
  3. Statement I is correct but Statement II is incorrect
  4. Statement I is incorrect but Statement II is correct

Answer

(1) Both Statement I and Statement II are correct

Solution

Statement I: In an octahedral field the five d orbitals split into t2g (lower) and eg (higher) sets about the barycentre. Since 3 × (−0.4 o) + 2 × (+0.6 o) = 0, each t2g electron lowers the energy by 0.4 o and each eg electron raises it by 0.6 o. Correct.

Statement II: As per NCERT, the five d orbitals of a free gaseous metal atom/ion are degenerate; in a complex the ligand field destroys this degeneracy (crystal field splitting). Correct.

∴ Both statements are correct.

Answer: (1)
