Ques. 1JEE Main 2024, 27 January (Evening Shift)

Given below are two statements : one is labelled as Assertion (A) and the other is labelled as Reason (R). In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below :

  1. (A) is false but (R) is true
  2. Both (A) and (R) are true but (R) is not the correct explanation of (A)
  3. Both (A) and (R) are true and (R) is the correct explanation of (A)
  4. (A) is true but (R) is false

Answer

(3) Both (A) and (R) are true and (R) is the correct explanation of (A)

Solution

(A): this is the definition of elasticity (NCERT) (A) is true.

(R): on deformation, atoms/molecules are displaced from equilibrium; interatomic and intermolecular forces pull them back restoring force (R) is true.

this restoring force is what brings the body back to its original shape (R) explains (A)

If (R) is read only as the origin of the restoring force (not the reason in the definition), option (2) is also argued; option (3) is the better choice.

Answer: (3)
