In which pair of ions both the species contain S-S bond?

  1. S4O62-, S2O32-
  2. S2O72-, S2O82-
  3. S4O62-, S2O72-
  4. S2O72-, S2O32-

Answer

(1) S4O62-, S2O32-

Solution

S4O62- (tetrathionate): O3S-S-S-SO3 ⇒ contains S–S bonds.

S2O32- (thiosulphate): one S is bonded to the central S ⇒ contains an S–S bond.

S2O72- (pyrosulphate): two SO3 units joined through O ⇒ S–O–S, no S–S bond.

S2O82- (peroxodisulphate): S–O–O–S ⇒ no S–S bond.

∴ Both S4O62- and S2O32- contain an S–S bond.
