The values of Kp for the reactions, X Y + Z ....(i) A 2B ....(ii) are in the ratio 9 : 1. If degree of dissociation of X and A be equal, then total pressure at equilibrium (i) and (ii) are in the ratio

  1. 36 : 1
  2. 1 : 1
  3. 3 : 1
  4. 1 : 9

Answer

(1) 36 : 1

Solution

Let degree of dissociation = α for both; total pressures P1 and P2.

(i) Moles: X = 1 − α, Y = α, Z = α; total = 1 + α

Kp1 = 2 P1(1- )(1+ ) = 2 P11- 2

(ii) Moles: A = 1 − α, B = 2α; total = 1 + α

Kp2 = (2 )2 P2(1- )(1+ ) = 4 2 P21- 2

⇒ Kp1 Kp2 = P14P2 = 91

∴ P1 : P2 = 36 : 1

H2S gas when passed through a solution of cations containing HCl precipitates the cations of second group of qualitative analysis but not those belonging to the fourth group. It is because

  1. presence of HCl decreases the sulphide ion concentration
  2. solubility product of group II sulphides is more than that of group IV sulphides
  3. presence of HCl increases the sulphide ion concentration
  4. sulphides of group IV cations are unstable in HCl.
