Which one of the following ionic species has the greatest proton affinity to form stable compound?

  1. NH2-
  2. F-
  3. I-
  4. HS-

Answer

(1) NH2-

Solution

Proton affinity of an anion measures its tendency to accept H+, i.e. its Brønsted basic strength.

As per NCERT, the weaker the acid, the stronger is its conjugate base.

Conjugate acids: NH3, HF, HI, H2S

Acid strength: HI > HF > H2S > NH3 (NH3 is the weakest acid of the four)

∴ Basic strength: NH2- > HS- > F- > I-

∴ NH2- has the greatest proton affinity and forms the stable compound NH3.

H2S gas when passed through a solution of cations containing HCl precipitates the cations of second group of qualitative analysis but not those belonging to the fourth group. It is because

  1. presence of HCl decreases the sulphide ion concentration
  2. solubility product of group II sulphides is more than that of group IV sulphides
  3. presence of HCl increases the sulphide ion concentration
  4. sulphides of group IV cations are unstable in HCl.
