[figure] Space between the plates of a parallel plate capacitor of plate area 4 cm2 and separation of 1.77 mm, is filled with uniform dielectric materials with dielectric constants (3 and 5) as shown in figure. Another capacitor of capacitance 7.5 pF is connected in parallel with it. The effective capacitance of this combination is pF. (Given 0 = 8.85 10-12 F/m)

Answer

15

Solution

C0 = 0 Ad = 8.85 10-12 4 10-41.77 10-3 = 2 10-12 F = 2 pF

The two layers (each of thickness d2) are in series:

C1 = 5 0 Ad/2 = 10C0 = 20 pF, C2 = 3 0 Ad/2 = 6C0 = 12 pF

C = C1C2C1 + C2 = 20 1232 = 7.5 pF

With 7.5 pF in parallel:

Ceff = 7.5 + 7.5 = 15 pF

Answer: 15
