Electric charge is transferred to an irregular metallic disk as shown in the figure. If 1, 2, 3 and 4 are charge densities at given points then, choose the correct answer from the options given below: [figure]

  1. B and C Only
  2. A and C Only
  3. D and E Only
  4. A, B and C Only

Answer

(4) A, B and C Only

Solution

On a charged conductor, surface charge density is larger where the radius of curvature is smaller ( 1r).

The pointed top ( 1) has the smallest radius of curvature 1 is the largest.

The bottom ( 3) is more sharply curved than the sides, where the outline follows the larger dashed circle ( 2, 4).

2 and 4 lie on parts of equal curvature 2 = 4.

1 > 3 > 2 = 4

A: 1 > 3; 2 = 4 — correct

B: 1 > 2; 3 > 4 — correct

C: 1 > 3 > 2 = 4 — correct

D and E — incorrect

Answer: (4)
