Two circular discs of radius each 10 cm are joined at their centres by a rod of length 30 cm and mass 600 gm as shown in figure. If the mass of each disc is 600 gm and applied torque between two discs is 43 105 dyne.cm, the angular acceleration of the discs about the given axis AB is rad/s2. [figure]

Answer
(4) 11
Solution
Axis AB is perpendicular to the rod, 10 cm from the centre of one disc and 20 cm from the other; it is parallel to a diameter of each disc.
Disc about its own diameter: I0 = MR24 = 600 1024 = 15000 g cm2
Disc 1 (d = 10 cm): I1 = 15000 + 600 102 = 75000 g cm2
Disc 2 (d = 20 cm): I2 = 15000 + 600 202 = 255000 g cm2
Rod (centre 5 cm from AB): I3 = 600 30212 + 600 52 = 45000 + 15000 = 60000 g cm2
I = 75000 + 255000 + 60000 = 3.9 105 g cm2
= I = 43 1053.9 105 11 rad/s2
