Moment of inertia about an axis AB for a rod of mass 40 kg and length 3 m is same as that of a solid sphere of mass of 10 kg and radius R about an axis parallel to AB axis with separation of 3 m as shown in figure below. The value of R is given as 2. The value of is . [figure]

Answer

15

Solution

Rod about the axis AB through its end (perpendicular to the rod):

Irod = ML23 = 40 (3)23 = 120 kg m2

Sphere about its own diameter: Icm = 25mR2 = 25 10 R2 = 4R2

The axis AB is parallel to this diameter at d = 3 m, so by the parallel axis theorem:

Isphere = Icm + md2 = 4R2 + 10 (3)2 = 4R2 + 90

Equating: 4R2 + 90 = 120

⇒ 4R2 = 30 ⇒ R2 = 152 ⇒ R = 152 m

∴ = 15

Answer: 15

A flywheel having mass 3 kg and radius 5 m is free to rotate about a horizontal axis. A string having negligible mass is wound around the wheel and the loose end of the string is connected to 3 kg mass. The mass is kept at rest initially and released.
