A country with a high rate of population growth took measures to reduce it. The figure below shows age-sex pyramids of populations A and B twenty years apart. Select the correct interpretation about them : [figure]

  1. "A" is more recent and shows slight reduction in the growth rate
  2. "B" is more recent showing that population is very young
  3. "A" is the earlier pyramid and no change has occurred in the growth rate
  4. "B" is the earlier pyramid and shows stabilized growth rate

Answer

(1) "A" is more recent and shows slight reduction in the growth rate

Solution

As per NCERT, the shape of an age pyramid reflects the growth status of a population: a broad base (many pre-reproductive individuals) shows an expanding (growing) population, while a narrower base shows a slower growth or a stable population.

In pyramid B the 0–9 age group is much wider than the 10–19 group very high birth rate rapidly growing population, i.e. the situation before the measures were taken.

In pyramid A the 0–9 group is only slightly wider than the 10–19 group fewer births than before.

A is the more recent pyramid and shows a slight reduction in the growth rate.
