The three boxes in this diagram represent the three major biochemical pathways in aerobic respiration. Arrows represent net reactants or products. [figure] Arrows numbered 4, 8 and 12 can all be
- H2O
- FAD or FADH2
- NADH
- ATP.
Answer
(4) ATP.
Solution
Pathway A = glycolysis (glucose → pyruvic acid, arrow 2); Pathway B = Krebs (TCA) cycle; Pathway C = electron transport system and oxidative phosphorylation (receives NADH by arrows 3, 6 and FADH2 by arrow 7; uses O2).
⇒ Arrow 4 is a net product of glycolysis, arrow 8 a net product of the Krebs cycle and arrow 12 a net product of the ETS.
∵ As per NCERT, ATP is formed in glycolysis (substrate-level phosphorylation), in the Krebs cycle (one GTP/ATP per turn, from succinyl-CoA) and in oxidative phosphorylation in the ETS,
∴ ATP is the only product common to all three pathways (H2O forms only in the ETS, NADH is not formed in the ETS, FADH2 forms only in the Krebs cycle).
