An electron moves on a straight line path XY as shown. The abcd is a coil adjacent to the path of electron. What will be the direction of current, if any, induced in the coil ? [figure]
- The current will reverse its direction as the electron goes past the coil
- No current induced
- abcd
- adcb
Answer
(1) The current will reverse its direction as the electron goes past the coil
Solution
Electron moving from X to Y conventional current from Y to X.
By the right-hand rule, its magnetic field in the region of the coil (above the path) is into the plane of the page.
As the electron approaches the coil, this flux increases induced current opposes it by producing an outward field anticlockwise current (abcd).
As the electron moves away, the flux decreases induced current is clockwise (adcb).
The induced current reverses its direction as the electron goes past the coil.
