The sum 1 + 3 + 11 + 25 + 45 + 71 + upto 20 terms, is equal to

  1. 7240
  2. 8124
  3. 7130
  4. 6982

Answer

(1) 7240

Solution

Differences of successive terms: 2, 8, 14, 20, 26, … form an A.P. with d = 6.

⇒ Tn = 3n2 + bn + c

T1 = 1: 3 + b + c = 1

T2 = 3: 12 + 2b + c = 3

⇒ b = -7, c = 5 ⇒ Tn = 3n2 - 7n + 5

(Check: T3 = 27 - 21 + 5 = 11 ✓)

∴ S20 = 3 n2 - 7 n + 5n

= 3 20 21 416 - 7 20 212 + 5 20

= 8610 - 1470 + 100

= 7240
