The radius of gyration of a solid sphere of mass 5 kg about XY is 5 m as shown in figure. The radius of the sphere is 5x 7 m, then the value of x is: [figure]

  1. 5
  2. 2
  3. 3
  4. 5

Answer

(4) 5

Solution

XY is a tangent to the sphere. By the parallel axis theorem:

IXY = 25MR2 + MR2 = 75MR2

MK2 = 75MR2 R2 = 5K27 = 5 257

R = 5 5 7 m

Comparing with 5x 7: x = 5

Answer: (4)
