Viable material of endangered species can be preserved by:

  1. Gene library
  2. Gene bank
  3. Gene pool
  4. Herbarium

Answer

(2) Gene bank

Solution

As per NCERT, in ex situ conservation gametes of threatened species can be preserved in viable and fertile condition for long periods using cryopreservation, and seeds of different genetic strains of commercially important plants can be kept for long periods in seed banks.

⇒ Such facilities storing viable germplasm (seeds, gametes, tissues) are called gene banks.

∴ A herbarium keeps only dried, dead specimens, and a gene pool is the total genes of a population.

Answer: (2)
