Given below are two statements : In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below :

  1. Both Statement I and Statement II are true
  2. Both Statement I and Statement II are false
  3. Statement I is true but Statement II is false
  4. Statement I is false but Statement II is true

Answer

(3) Statement I is true but Statement II is false

Solution

In fractional distillation the vapours of the mixture rise through the fractionating column.

On the way up, vapours of the higher-boiling liquid condense first and flow back, while vapours of the lower-boiling liquid keep rising ⇒ Statement I is true.

After repeated condensation and vaporisation, the vapours going up become richer in the LOW-boiling component (and the liquid flowing down richer in the high-boiling one) ⇒ Statement II is false.

Answer: (3)
