CsBr crystallises in a body centered cubic lattice. The unit cell length is 436.6 pm. Given that the atomic mass of Cs = 133 and that of Br = 80 amu and Avogadro number being 6.02 1023 mol-1, the density of CsBr is

  1. 4.25 g/cm3
  2. 42.5 g/cm3
  3. 0.425 g/cm3
  4. 8.25 g/cm3

Answer

(1) 4.25 g/cm3

Solution

In the CsBr unit cell, Cs+ is at the body centre and Br- ions are at the 8 corners.

⇒ Number of Br- = 8 18 = 1, number of Cs+ = 1

∴ Z = 1 formula unit of CsBr per unit cell

M = 133 + 80 = 213 g mol-1

a = 436.6 pm = 4.366 10-8 cm

a3 = (4.366 10-8)3 = 8.322 10-23 cm3

d = Z Ma3 NA

= 1 2138.322 10-23 6.02 1023

= 21350.10

= 4.25 g/cm3
