What will happen if the secretion of parietal cells of gastric glands is blocked with an inhibitor?
- In the absence of HCl secretion, inactive pepsinogen is not converted into the active enzyme pepsin.
- Enterokinase will not be released from the duodenal mucosa and so trypsinogen is not converted to trypsin.
- Gastric juice will be deficient in chymosin.
- Gastric juice will be deficient in pepsinogen.
Answer
(1) In the absence of HCl secretion, inactive pepsinogen is not converted into the active enzyme pepsin.
Solution
As per NCERT, parietal (oxyntic) cells secrete HCl and Castle's intrinsic factor; chief (peptic) cells secrete pepsinogen.
Pepsinogen is converted into the active enzyme pepsin on exposure to HCl.
If parietal cells are blocked, there is no HCl and pepsinogen is not activated to pepsin.
Enterokinase (duodenum), chymosin/rennin and pepsinogen (chief cells) do not depend on parietal cells.
