The figure shows a human blood cell. Identify it and give its characteristics. [Figure]

  1. Blood cell Monocyte, Characteristics Life span of 3 days, produces antibodies
  2. Blood cell B-lymphocyte, Characteristics Forms about 20% of blood cells involved in immune response
  3. Blood cell Basophil, Characteristics Secretes serotonin, inflammatory response
  4. Blood cell Neutrophil, Characteristics Most abundant blood cells, phagocytic

Answer

(3) Blood cell Basophil, Characteristics Secretes serotonin, inflammatory response

Solution

The cell is filled with large, coarse, darkly stained granules that obscure the nucleus ⇒ it is a basophil (granulocyte).

As per NCERT, basophils secrete histamine, serotonin, heparin, etc., and are involved in inflammatory reactions; they are the least numerous WBCs (0.5–1%).

Monocytes are phagocytic (antibodies come from B-lymphocytes); neutrophils are the most abundant WBCs, not the most abundant blood cells.

Answer: (3)
