A certain road accident patient with unknown blood group needs immediate blood transfusion. His one doctor friend at once offers his blood. What was the blood group of the donor?

  1. Blood group B
  2. Blood group AB
  3. Blood group O
  4. Blood group A

Answer

(3) Blood group O

Solution

∵ The patient’s blood group is unknown, the donor’s RBCs must not carry any antigen that the recipient’s plasma could attack.

⇒ As per NCERT, blood group O has no antigens (A or B) on its RBCs.

⇒ Hence group O blood can be donated to persons with any other blood group; O persons are called universal donors.

∴ The doctor friend who offered blood at once must have blood group O.
