If for some reason the parietal cells of the gut epithelium become partially non-functional, what is likely to happen?
- The pancreatic enzymes and specially the trypsin and lipase will not work efficiently.
- The pH of stomach will fall abruptly.
- Steapsin will be more effective.
- Proteins will not be adequately hydrolysed by pepsin into proteoses and peptones.
Answer
(4) Proteins will not be adequately hydrolysed by pepsin into proteoses and peptones.
Solution
As per NCERT, the parietal (oxyntic) cells of the gastric glands secrete HCl. HCl provides the acidic pH (about 1.8) and converts the proenzyme pepsinogen into active pepsin, which converts proteins into proteoses and peptones.
If parietal cells work only partially less HCl pH of the stomach rises (does not fall) and less pepsin is formed.
Proteins will not be adequately hydrolysed into proteoses and peptones.
