Through which cell of the embryo sac, does the pollen tube enter the embryo sac?

  1. Egg cell
  2. Persistent synergid
  3. Degenerated synergids
  4. Central cell

Answer

(3) Degenerated synergids

Solution

As per NCERT, the pollen tube, after reaching the ovary, enters the ovule through the micropyle and then enters one of the synergids through the filiform apparatus.

⇒ The synergid that receives the pollen tube degenerates, and the tube releases the two male gametes into its cytoplasm.

∴ The pollen tube enters the embryo sac through the degenerated synergid.
