Given below are two statements: One is labelled as Assertion (A) and the other is labelled as Reason (R). In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below.

  1. A is true but R is false.
  2. A is false but R is true.
  3. Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.
  4. Both A and R are true but R is NOT the correct explanation of A.

Answer

(2) A is false but R is true.

Solution

Assertion is false: a foam layer over a concrete roof keeps the room cooler (not hotter) in summer, because it reduces the heat conducted from the hot roof into the room.

Reason is true: foam contains trapped air pockets; air is a very poor conductor of heat, so the foam layer acts as thermal insulation.

Answer: (2)
