Which one of the following is an example of the action of the autonomic nervous system?

  1. Swallowing of food
  2. Pupillary reflex
  3. Peristalsis of the intestine
  4. Knee-jerk response

Answer

(3) Peristalsis of the intestine

Solution

As per NCERT, the autonomic neural system transmits impulses from the CNS to the involuntary organs and smooth muscles of the body.

⇒ Peristalsis is the involuntary wave-like contraction of the smooth muscles of the intestine, regulated by the autonomic (visceral) nervous system.

Swallowing begins as a voluntary act and the knee-jerk is a somatic spinal reflex of skeletal muscle.

∴ Peristalsis of the intestine is an example of the action of the autonomic nervous system.
