In Carius method 0.2425 g of an organic compound gave 0.5253 g silver chloride. The percentage of chlorine in the organic compound is

  1. 87.65%
  2. 53.58%
  3. 37.57%
  4. 34.79%

Answer

(2) 53.58%

Solution

1 mol AgCl (143.32 g) contains 1 mol Cl (35.45 g).

Mass of Cl in 0.5253 g AgCl = 35.45 0.5253143.32 g = 0.1299 g

% Cl = 0.12990.2425 100

% Cl = 53.58%

(With Cl = 35.5 and AgCl = 143.5, % Cl = 53.59% 53.58%.)

Answer: (2)
