Sodium fusion extract of an organic compound (Y) with CHCl3 and chlorine water gives violet color to the CHCl3 layer. 0.15 g of (Y) gave 0.12 g of the silver halide precipitate in Carius method. Percentage of halogen in the compound (Y) is . (Nearest integer) (Given : molar mass g mol-1 C : 12, H : 1, Cl : 35.5, Br : 80, I : 127)

Answer

43

Solution

Chlorine water oxidises I- to I2, which dissolves in CHCl3 giving a violet colour:

2I- + Cl2 I2 + 2Cl-

The halogen in (Y) is iodine and the precipitate is AgI.

Molar mass of AgI = 108 + 127 = 235 g mol-1

% of I = 127235 0.120.15 100

= 0.5404 80

= 43.2 43

Answer: 43
