Ques. 1JEE Main 2024, 1 February (Morning Shift)

Given below are two statements: one is labelled as Assertion (A) and the other is labelled as Reason (R). In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below :

  1. Both (A) and (R) are correct and (R) is the correct explanation of (A)
  2. (A) is not correct but (R) is correct
  3. (A) is correct but (R) is not correct
  4. Both (A) and (R) are correct but (R) is not the correct explanation of (A)

Answer

(3) (A) is correct but (R) is not correct

Solution

N is small and highly electronegative ⇒ NH3 molecules are H-bonded in the liquid

P is larger, less electronegative ⇒ PH3 has only van der Waals forces

⇒ b.p.: NH3 (238.5 K) > PH3 (185.5 K) ⇒ A is correct

R states the forces the other way round ⇒ R is not correct

Answer: (3)
