Six similar bulbs are connected as shown in the figure with a DC source of emf E, and zero internal resistance. The ratio of power consumption by the bulbs when (i) all are glowing and (ii) in the situation when two from section A and one from section B are glowing, will be : [figure]

  1. 4 : 9
  2. 9 : 4
  3. 1 : 2
  4. 2 : 1

Answer

(2) 9 : 4

Solution

Let the resistance of each bulb be R. In each section the bulbs are in parallel, and sections A and B are in series.

(i) All glowing: R1 = R3 + R3 = 2R3

(ii) Two in A, one in B: R2 = R2 + R = 3R2

With the same emf, P = E2 Req

P1P2 = R2R1

= 3R/22R/3

= 94

Ratio = 9 : 4

Answer: (2)
