In the circuits shown below, the readings of voltmeters and the ammeters will be : [figure]
- V1 = V2 and i1 = i2
- V1 > V2 and i1 > i2
- V1 > V2 and i1 = i2
- V1 = V2 and i1 > i2
Answer
(1) V1 = V2 and i1 = i2
Solution
Take the meters as ideal: an ideal voltmeter has infinite resistance and draws no current; an ideal ammeter has zero resistance.
Circuit 1: the voltmeter branch carries no current, so the whole current flows through the 10 resistor.
⇒ i1 = 10 V10 = 1 A and V1 = 1 10 = 10 V
Circuit 2: the branch with 10 and V2 in series also carries no current, so there is no potential drop across that 10 resistor.
⇒ i2 = 1010 = 1 A and V2 reads the full p.d. across the upper 10 resistor = 10 V
∴ V1 = V2 and i1 = i2
