Study the pathway given below: [figure] In which of the following options correct words for all the three blanks A, B and C are indicated?

  1. A Fixation, B Transamination, C Regeneration
  2. A Decarboxylation, B Reduction, C Regeneration
  3. A Carboxylation, B Decarboxylation, C Reduction
  4. A Fixation, B Decarboxylation, C Regeneration

Answer

(4) A Fixation, B Decarboxylation, C Regeneration

Solution

The figure shows the Hatch and Slack (C4) pathway.

A: In mesophyll cells, HCO3- is fixed with phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP) by PEP carboxylase to form the C4 acid oxaloacetic acid ⇒ Fixation.

B: In bundle sheath cells, the C4 acid is broken down to release CO2 and a C3 acid ⇒ Decarboxylation.

C: The C3 acid (pyruvic acid) is transported back to the mesophyll cells and converted to PEP again ⇒ Regeneration.

As per NCERT, the primary CO2 acceptor PEP is regenerated in the mesophyll cells, completing the cycle.

Answer: (4)
