After a mutation at a genetic locus the character of an organism changes due to the change in :-

  1. Protein synthesis pattern
  2. RNA transcription pattern
  3. DNA replication
  4. Protein structure

Answer

(4) Protein structure

Solution

A mutation changes the base sequence of DNA at that locus.

⇒ The changed DNA is transcribed into an altered mRNA, which changes the codons and hence the sequence of amino acids in the polypeptide.

⇒ The altered amino acid sequence changes the structure (and function) of the protein, e.g. in sickle-cell anaemia Glu → Val at the sixth position of the β-globin chain.

∴ The character (phenotype) changes due to the change in protein structure.

Answer: (4)
