Which of the following is the example of pleiotropy ?

  1. Thalassemia
  2. Haemophilia
  3. Sickle cell anaemia
  4. Colour blindness

Answer

(3) Sickle cell anaemia

Solution

Pleiotropy: a single gene produces more than one phenotypic effect.

As per NCERT, a pleiotropic gene affects several traits; the underlying mechanism is often the effect of the gene on a metabolic pathway.

In sickle cell anaemia, a single point mutation in the β-globin gene (GAG → GUG, glutamic acid → valine at the sixth position) changes the haemoglobin, which produces many effects: sickle-shaped RBCs, anaemia, blocked capillaries, pain, damage to organs and resistance to malaria.

∴ Sickle cell anaemia is a classic example of pleiotropy; haemophilia and colour blindness show a single main effect.
