The major organic product formed from the following reaction : [figure] is

  1. [figure]
  2. [figure]
  3. [figure]
  4. [figure]

Answer

(2) [figure]

Solution

Step 1: The amine adds to the carbonyl group (nucleophilic addition) and water is eliminated to give an imine (Schiff base):

(CH3)2CH-CO-CH3 + CH3NH2 -H2O (CH3)2CH-C(CH3)=N-CH3

Step 2: LiAlH4 reduces the C=N bond and hydrolysis (H2O) frees the amine:

(CH3)2CH-C(CH3)=N-CH3 [(iii) H2O](ii) LiAlH4 (CH3)2CH-CH(CH3)-NHCH3

The product is the secondary amine N,3-dimethylbutan-2-amine, in which the carbonyl carbon now carries H and -NHCH3.
