Electrolytic reduction of nitrobenzene in weakly acidic medium gives
- N-phenylhydroxylamine
- nitrosobenzene
- aniline
- p-hydroxyaniline
Answer
(3) aniline
Solution
In electrolytic reduction, nitrobenzene is reduced stepwise: C6H5NO2 C6H5NO C6H5NHOH C6H5NH2
In weakly acidic medium the reduction goes to completion and aniline is obtained.
In strongly acidic medium, N-phenylhydroxylamine formed in between rearranges to p-aminophenol (p-hydroxyaniline).
The product in weakly acidic medium is aniline.
