Assisted reproductive technology, IVF involves transfer of :
- Zygote into the fallopian tube.
- Ovum into the fallopian tube.
- Embryo with 16 blastomeres into the fallopian tube
- Zygote into the uterus
Answer
(1) Zygote into the fallopian tube.
Solution
As per NCERT, in IVF the ova from the wife/donor and sperms from the husband/donor are allowed to fertilise under simulated conditions in the laboratory; the zygote or early embryo is then transferred into the fallopian tube or uterus (embryo transfer, ET).
⇒ The zygote or early embryo up to 8 blastomeres is transferred into the fallopian tube (ZIFT – zygote intra fallopian transfer).
⇒ Embryos with more than 8 blastomeres are transferred into the uterus (IUT), so option (3) is wrong; transfer of an ovum (GIFT) does not involve in vitro fertilisation, so option (2) is wrong.
∴ IVF involves transfer of the zygote into the fallopian tube.
