What triggers activation of protoxin to active Bt toxin of Bacillus thuringiensis in boll worm?
- Acidic pH of stomach
- Body temperature
- Alkaline pH of gut
- Moist surface of midgut
Answer
(3) Alkaline pH of gut
Solution
As per NCERT, the Bt toxin protein exists as an inactive protoxin. Once an insect ingests it, it is converted into the active form of toxin due to the alkaline pH of the gut, which solubilises the crystals.
The activated toxin binds to the surface of midgut epithelial cells, creates pores, and causes cell swelling, lysis and death of the insect.
