In Bt cotton, the Bt toxin present in plant tissue as pro-toxin is converted into active toxin due to :
- action of gut micro-organisms
- presence of conversion factors in insect gut
- alkaline pH of the insect gut
- acidic pH of the insect gut
Answer
(3) alkaline pH of the insect gut
Solution
As per NCERT, Bacillus thuringiensis forms protein crystals containing a toxic insecticidal protein that exists as an inactive protoxin.
∵ Once an insect ingests the inactive toxin, it is converted into an active form due to the alkaline pH of the gut, which solubilises the crystals.
⇒ The activated toxin binds to the surface of midgut epithelial cells, creates pores, and causes swelling, lysis and death of the insect.
∴ Conversion is due to the alkaline pH of the insect gut.
