In human adult females oxytocin:

  1. causes strong uterine contractions during parturition
  2. stimulates pituitary to secrete vasopressin
  3. stimulates growth of mammary glands
  4. is secreted by anterior pituitary

Answer

(1) causes strong uterine contractions during parturition

Solution

As per NCERT, oxytocin is synthesised by the hypothalamus and released by the posterior pituitary (neurohypophysis).

⇒ Oxytocin acts on the smooth muscles of the body; in women it stimulates a vigorous contraction of the uterus at the time of child birth, and milk ejection from the mammary gland.

∵ Growth of mammary glands is stimulated by prolactin and ovarian hormones, and vasopressin is not released in response to oxytocin.
