A + 2B AB2 36.0 g of 'A' (Molar mass : 60 g mol-1) and 56.0 g of 'B' (Molar mass : 80 g mol-1) are allowed to react. Which of the following statements are correct ? Choose the correct answer from the options given below :

  1. A and C Only
  2. A and B Only
  3. C and D Only
  4. B and D Only

Answer

(4) B and D Only

Solution

Moles of A = 36.060 = 0.60 mol; moles of B = 56.080 = 0.70 mol

B needed for 0.60 mol A = 2 0.60 = 1.20 mol > 0.70 mol available

B is the limiting reagent. Statement A is incorrect.

Molar mass of AB2 = 60 + 2 80 = 220 g mol-1. Statement C is incorrect.

AB2 formed = 0.702 = 0.35 mol = 0.35 220 = 77.0 g. Statement B is correct.

A used = 0.35 mol = 0.35 60 = 21.0 g

A left = 36.0 - 21.0 = 15.0 g. Statement D is correct.
